Description of Event:

An employee was driving out a rotor pole key using a hammer for rotor disassembly as part of unit rehabilitation.  The hammer glanced off of the key and struck the employee’s thumb causing a laceration and fracture.

Actions Taken:

Medical treatment.

  • Hammer swung at drive rod while other hand was in line of fire (Risk Action = Use of hand tool for removal of keys).

  • No written procedure for this work
  • Air hammers are available but none that are the right size for this task
